I have been practicing on and off for over 15 years but regularly for the last 5 years. Recently, I started teaching yoga at Real Yoga and it’s been just amazing! I started from a purely physical interest but over the last 5 years, the interest has broadened and deepened to the other limbs of yoga and has become a way of life. Personally, I love teaching Ashtanga, since it’s already a pretty intense physical practice, so I remind students to breathe more, not to hurry and soften up. Also, where appropriate, add some light heartedness and humor as the students tend to be too serious and hard on themselves.
For other classes, in general, I always start and end off with breathing. The class itself can get pretty intense physically but I always ask students to do only what they can, to rest when needed and most importantly don’t hurt themselves. There will always be another time to practice, to try again. Overall, I will say I focus on the breath a lot and while encouraging them to challenge themselves, for students to enjoy the process so that they can cultivate a sustainable practice – not something they have to drag themselves to or use to beat themselves over with, we have already so many of those things in our life. Yoga used to mean just the asana practice, but it has come to be a way of bringing different parts of my life together; affecting how I view, think, feel and interact with myself, other beings and the world at large.
